St Columba's is an open and inclusive church, and welcomes all. The church was founded in 1879 as the Presbyterian church in Cambridge and has continued since 1972 as a congregation of the United Reformed Church, and the Church of Scotland Chaplaincy to the University of Cambridge. St Columba's is also the home of the St Columba Group Therapy Centre, the Cambridge Chinese Christian Church, and the city-centre home of Cambridge Voices.
The United Reformed Church is in frequent dialogue on unity with other traditions and has more than 400 local churches united with other denominations. Theologically, the United Reformed Church is a broad church. Our members welcome those who come from any church background or none. Our church services aim to be accessible to all – an order of service is available for Public Worship services. Sunday morning services are held at 11am, and consist of hymns, prayers, meditations, readings, music and an address. It lasts about an hour and afterwards there is opportunity to go through into the hall to share tea, coffee and conversation. Holy Communion services are held on the first Sunday of the month. St. Columba’s works closely with our sister church, Emmanuel on Trumpington Street , which is also a part of the United Reformed Church. Joint services are often held throughout the summer months. The time and locations of these services can be found in the Diary section.
The church at St Columba’s enables our members and visitors · to grow in unity and fellowship with all Christians, · to act by faith to promote the growth of justice and peace for the whole of God's creation, · to grow communities of faith, worship and mission, · to participate in the world Church for growing witness to Christ. The United Reformed Church has a strong Ecumenical Commitment, and works closely with the following bodies: Action of Churches Together in Scotland (ACTS) Churches Together in Wales (CYTUN) Churches Together in England (CTE) The Free Church Federal Council (FCFC) |
